In the world of blogging, it amazes me to find so many people willing to share their time and knowledge with you. Instead of one gigantic “self-help” group – it’s one big “food-help” group.
For instance, there is the Daring Bakers where a group of bakers get together each month to tackle a certain recipe. Being a part of this group has allowed me to tackle some recipes I would have never tried on my own.
When I first started my blog, Kath from A Cupcake or Two organized a blogger dinner and was kind enough to invite me. She, along with Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella, Betty from Betty’s Bites, Trish from Sugarlace and Ellie from Almost Bourdain all gave me tips on how to improve my blogging “skills” when I first started.
Most recently, I was struggling with the fact that almost every blog I read and person I spoke to mentioned that the best way to take pictures was to use “natural light”. Yeah right – try getting natural light when you work during the day – it’s almost impossible! I noticed I tended to then stick to recipes that I could store for future photos – like cakes, cookies or other sweets.
And, how many of you have struggled with cooking early in the morning just to take a photo of it and then having to go to work before 8 am!
I needed to find a way to take the pictures at night!
Simone from Junglefrog Cooking to the rescue! Have you seen her blog? If there is any doubt as to why I trust her completely on food picture advice – just go check out her blog. Her pictures are gorgeous (and so are her recipes!). She suggested I try the Lowel Ego lights which she had heard great things about. I did a few searches on google as well and found a post from Steamy Kitchen which was very helpful.
So this post is a small thank you to everyone! Merci, grazie, gracias, salamat!
Recipe
- 2 large eggs
- 100 grams sugar
- 80 grams butter, melted and cooled
- 100 grams flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- grated zest of 1 lemon and 1 lime
- 1 teaspoon each of lemon juice and lime juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- In a bowl, whisk the sugar and the eggs until frothy. Slowly add the butter and incorporate very well.
- Add the flour, baking powder, lemon and lime zest, lemon and lime juice and vanilla extract
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour before baking.
- Butter your madeleine pans (I used a combination of tiny and regular sized pans)
- Spoon the batter into the pans until three quarters full and place the pans in the freezer for 10 minutes
- Pre-heat the oven to 190c (fan forced)
- When the 10 minutes is up, bake the madeleines (small for 10 minutes and large for 13) for the required time.
- Remove from oven and cool.
- Best served immediately but can also be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
I so share your pain!!
When leaving for work at 7:30am and not getting home until about 6:30pm, there is only a small window for photos, i.e. weekends! And that’s when I have to bake most of the time, too. Very busy.
I so need one of these lights. Perfect! 🙂
Love your madeleines. Not on the list for this month though – but would have been perfect to showcase from the Lorraine area! 🙂
Trissa, I so have to get some of those lights! Now it’s fine that it’s Summer so I can photograph but come Winter, it gets a bit desperate and I need to photograph things before 3pm or else!
they are so cute Trissa
i agree with Trish you just keep getting better & better
& i decided against getting the lowego lights – gonna try and improve my d.i.y light box with some transparent plastic sheets and extra white light bulbs – save me some money 😉
i sometimes bake before work – and get nice sunshine coming into my kitchen
but thats cos i work 5 mins from home 🙂
Although I do most of my baking during the day, I love the sound of these lights! If I end up getting a whole setup, those will definitely be the ones I get =D.
Love the madeleines as well!
Hi Trissa, thank you for mentioning about those lights. I am finding it very frustrating indeed to try to chase after daylight. I am not sure if they are readily available in Asia but I will search for them.
Gosh, Thanks for this post. I need that LOWEL ego light. I’ve been taking photos at the garage and when it’s a little rainy and cloudy, my photo sucks.
I just bake Lemon Madeleines 2 weeks ago. They are so good except mine I didn’t add the lemon juice. Will try yours out next time. 🙂 They look fantastic.
I got mine a few months ago! They changed my life! Honestly! Congrats. You’re gonna be one happy lady making anything you want whenever you want!
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Divina Pe, Trissalicious. Trissalicious said: I got the lowel ego lights! So happy… check out my new post. http://bit.ly/madeleinecitron […]
I need one of those lights too. I don’t know if I could buy it here. The sun shines almost everyday but I do go down and take all my stuff with me before I take a photo. And sometimes the photo is still bad, then I have to do it all over again. Love the lime and lemon scented madeleines.
Holllyyysheep Trissa you just keep getting better and better! And I agree – try getting natural light when you work full time day time and the only vitamin D you skin gets is the ray of sunshine peeking through your work window! 🙂
Oh, I can so relate to cooking in light and photographing in the dark – even with daylight savings I never get home in time to make my pictures look any good. So you recommend the Lowel lights, then? In my case, a decent camera would help, too!
You are most welcome! I was curious about ego light as well but have doubt after reading some reviews from amazon.com. i find that a good lens and photoshop help too. Love your madeleines with the little humps!
Thanks for the sweet words Trissa!! I – ofcourse – already know the answer to the question so am not gonna spoil it…lol… And love the look of those madelines! I’ve had one of those baking forms in my hands many times thinking ‘should I buy it or not?’ but these delicious cookies make me seriously think that I should… Lemon and lime are my favorite flavors!
I think I possibly have the worst lit kitchen in Australia, I so badly need some of those lights! Do you think I could write them off as a tax expense due to my food blogging keeping me from going insane during my PhD?
Oh, and beautiful madeleines 🙂
