Thermomix
I saw it…
I wanted it…
TANTRUM
I got it…
Now… I know it sounds bratty… and it sounds like I had a major tantrum to get my latest (and promise, my very very last) kitchen appliance/luxury but, friends, when you want something, you gotta pull out all the stops for it… and this time… it was oohhh soooo worth it!
My husband and I first saw the Thermomix up close during a lunch at Sergi Arola’s Gastro restaurant in Madrid. I’d heard of it before but only thought it was a super powered food processor. During our tour of the kitchen, Sergi’s wife mentioned that the thermomix was one of their most indispensable appliances. I was needless to say, intrigued. A bit of research on the internet and I found out it could weigh, grate, mill, puree, grind, blend, cook, steam, crush, whisk, emulsify and knead… I was ready to get one and I told my husband I would get one in New York and take it home to Australia. He said there was no way we were going to take something that heavy back home.
Enter the tantrum… I begged, pleaded, cried, whined, and begged some more and said I really really REALLY needed one. But he stood firm. But the truth is, none of this mattered because no matter which store I asked – I went to Dean and Deluca, Sur la Table and a few other kitchen stores and was surprised to find out no one stocked it.
It seemed like no one even knew what a Thermomix was… until we had dinner at Momofuku’s Ko restaurant.
“Do you have a Thermomix?” I asked one of the chef’s while he was preparing our dinner.
“Nope. ” He said.
“Why not?” I asked. “I would have thought every kitchen would want one.”
“They are not available in the U.S.” he said. “If you are going to buy one, can you get me one too?” he added.
“Get two, one for him and one for me.” Chimed another chef who was listening to our conversation.
On our way home my husband said “I think you should definitely get a thermomix when we get home. If the chef’s in Momofuko want one then it’s probably worth it.”
And that… my friends… is how I got my Thermomix!
Lychee Sorbet
- 150 grams sugar
- 300 grams lychees (canned or fresh)
- 1 egg white
- 2 x 350 grams ice cubes
- Place the sugar into the TM bowl and mill for 10 seconds on speed 9
- Add the lychee followed by the 350 grams of ice and egg white. Slowly turn the speed dial to speed 10.
- Add the remaining ice after 20 seconds. Use the spatula to assist in the incorporation of the lychee with the ice.
And by the way… that saying… I just got it off a mug I saw the other day… 🙂
Hi,
Your sorbet seem very yummy!
I loves my Thermomix. I move from France (and I waited to buy one). I belive that it is sold in the US, but I had a hard time to find it (after a long reserch, I find that they was sold in Canada ). It’s a great shame, that US doesn’t sell it. It’s expensive, but you can do a lot of thing.
gee, what a fuss over the thermomix.. and how rightfully so! I’d never heard of it so I just ran it through google. It “weighs, cooks, chops, crushes, emulsifies, whips, mixes, steams, blends, kneads, grinds, simmers, grates, mills!!” the tagline reads. i am slack jawed. It’s like the terminator of all kitchen appliances.
Oh man this looks delicious! Everything here looks so yummy! And your photographs are beautiful!
I recently launched my own blog http://www.prettygoodfood.com I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think! Thanks and Happy Cooking!
That looks delicious! I love lychee martinis and this looks like the frozen equivalent. Yum!
Your pic is so beautiful Trissa. You must have not only a great Thermomix, but a great camera! (I am still waiting for a new lense to be fixed on my new Canon 500D)
I need lessons on how to get so many comments….amazing!
I bet all your neighbors have appliance envy now! I know I would if I lived near you. 😉
Wow, this a sorbet I need to make! I love lychee nuts. Also, it looks beautiful as do your photos. That said, vodka is flavorless, so you definitely don’t taste it, plus..1 tabelspoon is a teeny amount, so trust me, no alcohol like effects 🙂 Try it with a sorbet – you’ll love the texture!
Thanks Lisa – am not a fan of alcohol but if I can’t taste it I’m willing to give it a shot!
I guess now you know how to get your husband to agree to buying anything… just takes a little trip to Momofuko and a quiet word in the chef’s ear 🙂
You really went through a lot of trouble to get the Thermomix! You could have just ordered through this distributor located in western Canada http://www.easycooking.ca. They sell anywhere in the US and I heard they ship pretty fast.
Totally trying this recipe asap and will def be on the hunt for some lyche. Really cool the chefs at Momofuku want one too. Wonder what crazy stuff they could create with it. Have fun cooking and taking some really great pictures.
Lovely styling and tones, Trissa! Lychee is a favorite fruit and flavor of mine. This sorbet would be a great treat along with a few fresh lychees, ideally.
I want a thermomix too!!! where did you find one? your lyche sorbet looks so good, and if you did that with your thermomix, I definitely want one now!!!!
I can imagine how delicious this must be. I am very familiar with lychee, they are very exotic 🙂
Trissa…good for you! What a fun new gadget…and the lychee sorbet looks so refreshing…great picture!
Tantrums and a bit of sulking gets you everything! Love the sorbet!
I had never heard of a thermomix before… Sounds very versatile – although I’m not sure if I’ll be able to convince my partner we need one… Apart fro that, I already have a huge list of cooking type things I want… 🙂
I definitely gotta throw more tantrums 😉
Where do they sell the thermomix in Australia?
alright Trissa, I think you got me hooked. I want a Thermomix as well. LOL loved how the chefs at Momofuku wanted one too, although i wondder why America doesn’t stock them
Just checked out the price for one. Your husband must REALLY love you! Hope you make the most of your investment 🙂
Makes sense, though never thought to make a sorbet from ice.
My sister and I really really want one too, since we saw Tetsuya using one in a demonstration. Could I ask where you got yours from?
Gosh, I love lychees. When visiting Hawaii, I always go for the lychee shaved ice. I bet it’s scrumptious as a sorbet. Yum!
So I had to consult Google because apparently I’m out of the Thermomix loop. Sounds like quite an appliance, wow! I think my husband and yours would get along quite well–they seem to think alike! 🙂
Maybe I should throw a tantrum too! I want I want!
Oh Trissa, I chuckled though this post. Quite funny how a chef’s endorsement got you your desired TM! Cute serving cup btw
fancy shmancy! i’m like a kid in a candy store when it comes to kitchen gadgets. now if only i had the funds to buy all the ones i want… 🙂
Good to see chunking a tantie got the TMX. Funny that it was after lunch at Sergi’s previous restaurant Le Broche in 2003 was when I first saw the TMX.
Some American chefs have worked out that they are available through Canada. Thomas Keller certainly has a few – via Lynette M
Found that you’d already been ripped off here –

I do think thermomix is a good appliance – Just a bit 0ut of my budget at the moment. 🙂
All hail the thermomix! The sorbet looks delicious!
I’m in Asia right now on vacation and I have been eating SO many lychees!!
This looks delicious!
Speaking of eating lychees, I’m going to go eat some more now. 🙂

The Peach Kitchen

blowing peachkisses
Wow, now I want a Thermomix too! Beautiful photos and the sorbet sounds so refreshing…I could really use some of that too!
Sigh…if only we were all as lucky as you Trissa! Then we would all have Thermomixes and be able to make beautiful sorbets with such easy recipes!
I just googled Thermomix, it looks like a wicked piece of equipment! Do you mind if I ask how much it cost? My hubby would love it!
this looks awesome! we made something similar but without the eggs in our ice cream maker.
I saw this…
I wanted this…
TANTRUM
I got it…(nope! it just did not work here!!!) :O
I have tried a lychee sorbet in an ice-cream parlor back in Singapore and I love it!
Congratulations on your new purchase!
mmmmmmmmmmmm…..lychee is one of the freshest tasting canned fruits ever…psecially when served cold…..
LOL LOL.. Why am I not surprised!! :)))) If that sorbet came from there, totally a worthy buy!! ;-).. yep.. thermomix is a Australian thing.. have been hearing about it a lot lately in the Australian blogs. How about putting a snap of the m/c. I haven’t even seen it!
I think I missed out big time. Was it at the Sydney Good Food & Wine show? I saw this guy raving about making soup in a blender type contraption. I sort of kept walking as I thought err why? If so then I really need to stop and check all things out properly!!
Such an incredibly easy way to make sorbet and it looks delicious.
I want one too…. but I don’t think my tantrums work… 😛
Actually after I saw you tweet about your Thermomix, I googled it – it is a HUGE machine…
That is all you need to do? Add ice cubes???!! and it is sorbet ready to eat??
This is a super refreshing dessert. Beautiful capture too 🙂
I had to google thermomix – man, that is one super gadget!
This was utterly trissalicious! Had it last week and it was soooo good it disappeared just like that!
I’m so lucky my sister got a thermomix!!!
Hehe, I can imagine you pointing and pouting at the Thermomix! After seeing the very brief, incredibly easy recipe for the lychee sorbet, *I want one too!*
