I love Sydney. I really do. But I just wish we had decent food trucks roaming around the city. I’ve been reading about how gourmet food trucks have taken over in cities like New York, L.A., and San Francisco and how they let their customers know their latest locations via twitter or facebook… and feel a twinge of envy. All we have is Mr Whippy.
From dumplings in New York, boeuf bourguignon in San Francisco, and chicken adobo in L.A., these trucks are changing the foodie landscape in major U.S. cities…. I am surprised they haven’t caught on in Sydney… yet. Food trucks would be the perfect answer to the city’s exorbitant cost of rent and real estate.
I first heard of Roy Choi, chef and owner of Kogi BBQ, from an article in the Australian Gourmet Traveller. Intrigued, I did a little more research – turns out he’s been around for sometime – earning a degree at the Culinary Institute of America and working at Le Bernardin in New York. However he is most known for his gourmet food truck serving Korean/Mexican fusion food such as kimchi quesadillas, Korean short ribs on tacos and of course, the famous Kogi Dog.
I was, to be honest, a little taken aback when I read the ingredient list for the kogi dog. Kimchi? Cabbage? Cheese? Sesame mayonnaise? I decided it would “not work” and went on to other recipes. Weeks went by…
I could not stop thinking about the kogi dog.
So I gave in… one Saturday morning and bought myself a jar of kimchi and took the plunge… and did not regret it one bit.
If you aren’t lucky enough to live in L.A. and have access to one of the Kogi Travelling Food Trucks, then do try making this at home. A hot dog sandwich with an Asian inspired coleslaw and the spicy pickled flavour of the kimchi really does work. So while I wait for Sydney to have its own food trucks serving gourmet food, I’ll help myself to another one of these kogi dogs!
Kogi Dog
Recipe from Food & Wine Magazine, Serves 8
- 2 cups finely shredded cabbage
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- vegetable oil
- 1 cup kimchi, drained and patted dry
- 8 hot dog buns, split
- 8 all beef hot dogs
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 cups shredded romaine
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups cilantro
- sriracha sauce, for drizzling
- In a large bowl, toss the cabbage, scallion and lime juice; season with salt and pepper. In a mortar, pound the sesame seeds until crushed and transfer to a small bowl. Stir in the mayonnaise and season with salt.
- In a nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the kimchi and cook over high heat until browned all over, 3 minutes.
- Light a grill. Brush the insides of the buns with oil and grill over moderately high heat, cut side down, until crisp, 20 seconds. Turn and grill for 20 seconds longer. Spread the cut sides with the sesame mayonnaise.
- Grill the hot dogs over moderately high heat until nicely charred all over, 3 minutes. Tuck the hot dogs into the buns with the kimchi and cheddar. Top with the cabbage salad, romaine, onion and cilantro sprigs. Drizzle a little Sriracha on top and serve.

We’re from Vancouver, Canada and we’re thinking about taking our mobile foof business to Sydney (www.bluesmokebbq.ca) after our season ends here in late October. Do you think it would work there?
@Wayne – just had a look at your website… I’m craving “the Clucker” now! Let me know when you get here!
Totally agree about the food trucks. All we have is Mr Whippy and also the Kebab shops but they don’t seem to move around much. I wonder why? Maybe there are council restrictions? who knows! Would love to start one myself some day
Kogi Dog looks bloody awesome too, beats the original.
Nice recipe! tried it out and loved the kogi dog!
I’ve stumbled onto your site and that hot dog has ensnared me.
Where I’m from, Toronto/London, Canada, there’s some ridiculous laws against street meat, so the only thing we have available are your basic, generic hot dog stands, and french fries or ice cream in trucks. I’m uber-jealous of your food trucks.
I will definitely try out that recipe this weekend. And, I also noticed that Sriracha sauce in the background
Nom,nom,nom..not the typical presentation of hotdog in a bun.. looks healthy and delicious.
That looks so yummy!
oh man that thing looks amazing, sriracha on anything is good too. im gonna steal this recipe from you =] thanks!
Neat recipe here. I’ll give it a try sometime after I get some hot dogs. Thanks for the share! Spicy is love! LOL
That looks so appetizing yumtastic ^_^
That Kogi dog looks yummy 🙂
This does look very tasty. Food trucks are over-rated. Nothing kills the appetite like carbon monoxide as they pull up. Electric trucks…launch a fleet of those, with some low sodium options, and you’re onto a winner.
looks fabulous! thanks for sharing.
http://www.modestcupboard.wordpress.com
I’d eat it… Except I can’t eat… Not until this fast I’m doing for a sort of religious/political/social/spiritual cause is over, that is!
sound Nice!one day happens in shanghai! I like that!
Looks good doll I’m gonna try it. I’ll add your link at http://thor27.wordpress.com on the links. Later!
Thank you for sharing the recipe!
I’m intrigued so will have to give it a try. I’d also not heard about the gourmet street meat scene as you describe it, sounds like a good application of social media to offer up low cost yet interesting lunches.
The Kogi Dog sounds delicious. I’m glad you mentioned the Chicken Adobo. It’s one of my country’s delicacy. My mom used to make Chicken Adobo Sandwhich which is mainly shreded adobo on a bun or sandwhich. Very tasty. great post. congrats for being pressed.

That looks absolutely de-lish! And I do live in LA and have had Kogi. We waited in line for 45 minutes to get our fix!
I live in Sydney too, and it would be so great if we had food trucks!

MMMM oh my that looks delicious! I hardly ever eat meat too, but I would eat that 😛 I’ve got a feeling that the smell of a couple of those cooking will fill my kitchen in the next few days 🙂
I love Kogi.
It’s kind of overpriced for such a small portion, but I think it makes up for it by the taste.
Lucky that I live around SGV/LA area. ^.^
Looks yum!
The best thing about these food/taco trucks here in our L.A. area is that new ones pop up regularly. Seems every week we have trucks gathering at one spot. Tonite we have another.
Your nation has the advantage that it is still fertile, wide open territory, whereas we have a glut(tony) of them now! I recently wrote something similar about this subject in my May 7th blog post.
I leave near Chicago, home to Vienna Beef hotdogs. The classic Chicago dog has pick-a-lili on it – a neon green pickle relish. I have never seen a hotdog like this but might be willing to try it once.
That actually looks pretty fantastic!
This looks delicious!!
hotdog is my favourite food. You shared us a very “delicious” recipe to try. Thanks
Be greatful you don’t have food trucks. It allows you to keep productive cooking habits. Don’t be sucked into the fast food life style. Cooking is valuable skill that is slowely becoming less common because people are always trying to find the easy way out. Yes, it is okay to treat yourself or even take a day off cooking to eat out. Just be careful not to get sucked in.
I think it is a proven fact that kimchi automatically makes anything at least 83% better.
What exactly is kimchi?
Hi there – Kimchi is a korean side dish of pickled and spiced vegetables.

I was just in Sydney for 4 months, and I have to say that Sydney is a great city, but I do have complaints about the food selection! Mostly at night, however. I recently graduated from college in New Brunswick New Jersey, which is a huge college town, about an hour south of New York City. There, they have coined the term “Grease Truck”, which is literally a truck on the main campus that sells everything anyone could want to eat at 2 am after a night of drinking: sandwiches stuffed with chicken fingers, mozzorella sticks, french fries, or Rolls intermingling pork roll with mince meat and cheese. These sandwiches are appropriately referred to as “Fat Sandwiches”, and have special names like: “Fat Daryl” or “Fat Moon”, and while you may cringe now at the thought of consuming your entire weeks worth of calories in one night, don’t knock it till you try it! Its definitely an experience worth having, if at least to say you’ve had it.
I’ll admit that some nights after leaving the bars in Sydney I wished that there were some greae trucks parked outside on the corner by my apartment, but I had to settle for some Hungry Jacks instead. Oh well, maybe Australia will catch on soon!
Sydney food trucks would be amazing. Why haven’t they happened yet?
this dish is very amazing and im sure its very delicious to eat good blog i will definitely try in my home.
This sounds delicious and much like the Vietbnamese roll craze taking Sydney over at the moment. Shame about the lack of street food and vendor trucks…There is Taste Baguette for fancy rolls, but I like the $4 roll at Hunter Connection in the CBD much better. The pork stick roll is very similar to this, though they don’t use kimchi. But all the greenery is there! Yup!
Well done on getting FP.
This is awesome.
We definitely don’t have enough roaming street food in Sydney! Actually we don’t have any. The closest you’d get would be Harry de Wheels, or a sausage sizzle at the local sports ground on the weekend. I’m in Thailand now and they have some amazing street food- especially the Nutella pancakes.
Thanks for the recipe, it looks amazing!
Never heard of kogi dog before. Would like to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing : )

Sounds good… I made a pulled pork sandwich with kimchi last summer, it rocked!
This does look very tasty. Food trucks are over-rated. Nothing kills the appetite like carbon monoxide as they pull up. Electric trucks…launch a fleet of those, with some low sodium options, and you’re onto a winner.
hm, cant decide if id like it or not. It’s like an oxymoron….a healthy hot dog lol
NICE! We are starting to get more cool food trucks here in Vancouver, Canada : lots of crepe ones, a korean bbq taco one today, some satay (read: gourmet meat on sticks!), Southern style pulled pork etc, and the newest I have seen is a casual french food truck.
Our most popular one is Japadog: Japanese style hot dogs, of course! with wasabi mayo, seaweed, fish eggs, etc. they have many different kinds! Good quality and friendly workers. They get line-ups at lunch every day! Ice Cube even went there when he came to town (they have a picture of him on their cart). Try it if you come over to the Northwest sometime!
Love the foodtrucks!
I live in San Diego and they don’t have these wonderful little trucks either so don’t feel too bad.
Nice. 😀 That’s a whole lot of flavor.
interesting! i bet my husband would love this!
Love me some food trucks! I lived in LA one summer in the late ’80’s and literally lived off food truck food. Ostensibly the truck that came by twice a day served Mexican food, but my favorite dish was Steak Teriyaki served as a burrito. They came by our car dealership (Cormier Chevrolet) and it was just the best. Great post!
John
I’m not much for any “roach coach” or eating establishment without running water but that hot dog does look yum!
Hi Trissa,
Haven’t tried your kogi dog yet but it looks like a winner. Why not be on the avant garde there in Sydney and set up a Kogi dog truck? You get to leave your banking job! AND I have a name a new name for it: The Kogi Hoagie!
I’m ashamed to say I’ve never tried kimchi…but it’s a favourite of Iron Chef Chen Kinichi so it must be great! You do lovely photos…it looks mouthwatering…
this looks so yummy and good!!thanks for sharing
The only thing that might put me off from trying this is…cabbage….lol… however…I am very intrigued indeed…you just might persuade me…lol. (and that delish looking pic of the kogi dog!)
i’m not a big hot dog fan, but that looks tasty
Sounds amazing. I remember my wife and I trying to find the Come to Jesus Taco Truck in Sonoma and missing it. We love taco trucks!
Hot dog and a beer sounds so good right now, and that dog looks amazing! I may try it 🙂
I love it when a bunch of ingredients that should not mix, do.
Thanks for the post and some inspiration!
Congratulations on Freshly Pressed!
love it…so fresh..and make it home made that way you wont gag over the icky mustard! lol. congrats on fp’ed
I had a Kogi dog in New York. At the time I didn’t even know what was going to be on it I just saw this cute truck and a ton of people waiting in line and figured it had to be good. I got in line, got the hot dog and it was pure heaven. I don’t think I could re-create it if I tried.
Sydney’s Kogi Dog very testy and delicious, good image captured , cabbage and salad made me crazy to eat.
I’ve stumbled onto your site and that hot dog has ensnared me.

Oh yes, that is what I’m talking about. Kogi dog it is.
I think I’ll share your envy. I mean I feel Australia lacks just that bit of socio-culture.
I’d love to walk the streets of Brisbane city with legit, decent taco stands.
Anyway definitely going to try this Koki Dog recipe out!
Thanks. http://calogeromirafoodand.wordpress.com
I LOVE hot dogs, so it might just be something I’ll have to try. Thanks for sharing!
I’m 100% with you there. I’ve been salivating over these roaming food trucks selling everything from cupcakes to full on clambakes. Unfair! You should totally start the kogi dog truck!
Australia is definitely lacking in proper food vans. Its eith er Mr Whippy or the Community Support van serving instant coffee and bread to the homeless. I miss the felafel trucks, hot dog vendors and pretzel stands in NY. I’ve never heard of the Kogi Dog. Judging from the ingredient list I think I would love it.
oh boy, i think this is awesome. i’m making this
Trissa, I will forever hate you for making this meaty (hahahha, just kidding)! You make me just want to eat meat again, hahahahhaha! Miss you! You are the first person I visited in blogs when I came back.
Trissa, you’re not alone. I’m with you. Wish we could have some gourmet food trucks here. The only one – the homemade icecream truck that was used to be driving around my suburbs seemed to be gone recently. So sad.
Thanks for bringing the Kogi Dog in Australia. I have to try it at home. It looks delicious.
let’s start our own Sydney food truck, Triss!
This one’s is pretty doable. I have been good reviews about Kogi dog and I just didn’t have the right recipe for it. My girlfriend would love this.
Thanks for sharing!
I’ve just stumbled across your blog, and I had to laugh out loud about the Kogi dogs. I am American but spent five years in Australia, three of which were in Sydney. Trust me… Anything you get in Sydney is far better on average than what you’ll find in America! The Kogi Taco truck in LA is good fun, though. They make some very interesting quesadillas, and their burritos are pretty good as well. I also spent some time living in South Korea as a kid and in South American countries as an adult, so I find the “fusion” very interesting.
Portland, Oregon, is home to some of my favorite street food trucks. Koi Fusion there does something similar to Kogi. There’s a Thai cart called Nong’s Khao Man Gai that is amazing. And the Czech food from Tabor is good, too. Here’s a link with some info about the scene in Portland: http://www.foodcartsportland.com/ . If you ever make the trip over here, Portland is probably my favorite city in the US. And it even has great coffee which is a minor miracle in this country! Stumptown in Portland and Blue Bottle in San Francisco are the two places I trust! Counter Culture and Intelligentsia are also great, and they are direct trade companies.
You might also like this link: http://www.foodtrucktalk.com/tag/oregon .
Look up the Bacon Jam boys in Seattle. They started with a food truck and have quite a story!
And the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in NYC… The list goes on!
I’ll stop rambling now, but I look forward to seeing your future posts!
P.S. There’s quite a good kimchi recipe in the recent book _Canning for a New Generation_. Not sure if they printed it in Australia, but it’s definitely on Amazon.com!
I love you! I really do! BUT! A hotdog sandwich …? No such thing … a hotdog is a hotdog, period. You slap it on a processed bun. You top it with onions, mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, chili, and cheese … or any combination of the above. Let’s not take it to any other level, please. If you do, it is no longer a hotdog … it’s a ‘hotdog sandwich’ … and the purist would ask, What the hell is that?
Trissa come over here so we could chase the truck together. I live in San Diego but worked in LA until early this year and mind you, me and myco workers were always chasing the food trucks like crazy. This definitely is a Kogi truck look alike i tell you.
It’s been awhile since I came over or since we’ve bumped into each other on the blogoshpere but boy am I glad to be here today.
xo,
malou
Wow – that ain’t no simple sausage in a dog!
I watched an episode of food truck revolution and roy choi..he had amazing food!! love this kogi dog!!
sweetlife
Gosh I wish Sydney did have food trucks! Hmmm now I’m craving a hot dog too!
I must admit, I’m rather surprised a large city like Sydney doesn’t have food trucks. Wonder if there is some legal reason? We don’t have them here either, but it sure is fun to try them in NYC when I go!
This Kogi dog looks delish!
haha how weird, have to taste it to believe it 🙂
Food trucks will happen… we have 2 in Melbourne and I am sure it will grow.
This is making me so hungry, Trissa, and I don’t even eat meat. I bet this would work even with the veggie dogs that I don’t really like. The kimchi and other flavors are probably delicious enough to make up for it :).
looks yum! those food trucks are slowly making its way here in DC as well…although $15 bucks for a lobster roll is a bit much for me lol
I loved the article about food trucks as well – it seems like really amazing fusion cooking. I also love the idea of lots of food trucks getting together! This looks so good.
Delicious! Perhaps you should start selling these from a truck that roams about the Inner West. I have heard a whisper that Sydney won’t be waiting too much longer for food trucks
Mmmm, kogi dogs. I saw them when I was in NY but didn’t get to try one.
Totally agree about the food trucks. All we have is Mr Whippy and also the Kebab shops but they don’t seem to move around much. I wonder why? Maybe there are council restrictions? who knows! Would love to start one myself some day 😀
Kogi Dog looks bloody awesome too, beats the original.
I’ll admit, I’m dubious too….but if you say it’s delicious that’s good enough for me.
That looks so good.
This Kogi dog is making me hungry Trissa, ggrrrr. LOL! I love the Kogi truck roaming around our areas here in LA. We always get the Korean Taco with lots of Kim-Chee, hmmm yumm. Thanks for sharing.
